Socioeconomic inequalities in health
Outreach work with people experiencing homelessness has produced positive results in the Czech environment. It has led to a reduction in hospital admissions and hospital emergency room visits, eased pressure on health service capacity and reduced overall health care costs. This is according to a study co-authored by Martin Šimon of the SYRI National Institute.
The Czech Republic has large reserves in the provision of health care for the homeless. "The public health system is under enormous pressure from demographic ageing, with housing insecurity and homelessness on the rise. We have one of the highest proportions of people experiencing homelessness in the European Union. We are fourth in Europe in this respect," Simon points out. According to the latest FEANTSA report, approximately 0.2% of the population, or 20 000 people, are homeless in the Czech Republic.
