Noise is linked to obesity, SYRI study finds

04.02.2025

People who live in noisy environments are more likely to have weight problems. This link has now been demonstrated in a study by researchers at the SYRI National Institute. The urban environment is an important factor affecting health, and it is exposure to excessive noise that can lead to a higher risk of overweight and obesity. This effect can ultimately be exacerbated by depressive symptoms, points out Andrea Dalecká from the SYRI National Institute and Masaryk University.

Obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges worldwide. In 2019, for example, a high body mass index was responsible for 15% of deaths in Central Europe. This has led to various interventions to promote healthy lifestyles. „But each of us is affected by a complex web of stressors, including social factors and the environment we live in. Outdoor noise in particular is one of the most important urban stressors affecting health. In Europe, more than 20% of the population is exposed to harmful levels of noise and its effects are often underestimated," said Dalecká.
