Concerns about side effects of covid-19 vaccination appear to have led to a fertility drop in 2022

06.01.2025
The significant decline in fertility in the Czech Republic between 2021 and 2022 is highly likely to be related to the covid-19 vaccination. In a situation where vaccination was the only way to return to a life without restrictions, Czech women were probably delaying pregnancy. This is suggested by research by SYRI National Institute scientists who modelled fertility for 2022, assuming that women had deliberately postponed their reproductive intentions in the month of vaccination due to fears of possible side effects of the vaccine. While fertility increased from 1.76 children per woman at the start of the pandemic to 1.83 between 2020 and 2021, it dropped significantly to just 1.62 children per woman between 2021 and 2022. The current study contributes to understanding the possible causes of this decline.
